How/When Should I begin to Socialize My Puppy?
by Judy Estes - Written for Robson Ranch Newspaper, February, 2008

Beginning your life with your puppy should be fun and rewarding. Socialization is extremely important between your puppy’s first 8 to 16 weeks of age. This time period is called the “open window” or “imprintable” stage of your puppy’s life.

The “imprintable” stage may take up to 5 months to completely close. Have fun by taking your puppy to a puppy obedience class. (Check with your veterinarian for all vaccination requirements.) It is important to expose your puppy to many of life’s experiences. Introduce them to all types and ages of people, expose them to everyday noises; lawnmowers, vacuums, children playing, cars, other animals and other noises around your home and community.

Let other people play with them, touch their feet, face, mouth, tail, ears, roll them on their back. Introduce them to older friendly dogs, safely greeting children; and teach them to nicely release toys and/or feeding bowls. Socialization is the best way to keep a puppy from being fearful and over reactive around everyday events.
